Description:
General Specs: Remington, 1863, .58CAL, 9lbs. 6oz., LOP 13 9/16"
Serial Number:  NSN

Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer this scarce Remington US Model 1863 with bayonet and sling. Accounts state that 12,501 of these rifles were ordered from Remington by the Union Army Ordnance Department between 1862-1865 for service in the Civil War. It remains unclear if any of the rifles made it to the troops, but they were considered a secondary issue weapon so maybe they were confined to rear line duties! This example certainly appears unfired, the nipple and flash hole look to be undamaged, the bore is in excellent condition with strong rifling. The stock exhibits two cartouches on the left side, one is barely visible but when viewed correctly the cypher HDL (Henry D. Jennings) can be made out. Bellow that is the well-defined cartouche of BH, for inspector Benjamin Hannis. The barrel shows R.K.A. (Remick K. Arnold) inspection initials marked on the left barrel flat at the breech. The side plate has crisp markings and US Eagle. This Model 1863 has a barrel with 98% factory blue with some small areas going to patina, the side plate and hammer show 99% factory original case color. The brass has some areas of discoloration. The wood has a few of the expected dings from military service but the rifle looks like it could have remained in storage on a gun rack. The rifle has an unissued period sling with inspector marks and an unissued bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet is a tight fit; we have not attempted to force it to seat! The Model 1863 “Zouave” nickname is of unclear origins, but it has become ‘must have’ in collector circles. There are modern reproductions of the Remington Model 1863 but only 12,501 of the real thing, they are seldom up for sale and this example is in exceptional condition, so act quickly and add a real Zouave to your armory. Thanks for looking! This rifle is a percussion gun and is considered an antique, it does not require an FFL, it can be shipped directly to you. Please check your local laws. Please note, VFI is limited to 25 images on Guns International, please call or email us for more photographs of this gun or visit the Vintage Firearms .
