Description:
The Luger is one of the most famous pistols in the world, easily recognizable thanks to its ray-gun-like appearance. The design was one the earliest semi-automatic pistols available anywhere in the world and has seen wide use in many places all over the world. The design was introduced in the year 1900, predating the Colt Model 1911 by over a decade. The early models featured a unique (for the time) grip safety. After World War One, many ex-military Lugers, both military contract and purchases by individual officers came into DWMs possession. Many of these pistols were rebuilt and sold commercially as the Model 1920. Thus, the 1920 can be found in both 7.65mm and 9mm caliber, and in a variety of configurations, including some with the grip safety of the 1900-1906 models. The barrels usually come in two forms: a thin, 4-inch pencil barrel, and a fat, 3-7/8 inches barrel. The pistol shown is in good condition overall. After a partial disassembly, all the serial-numbered parts match. Barrel length is 3.75 inches, slightly shorter than the official 3-7/8 inches. The bore is in excellent condition with what appears to be minor copper fowling but strong rifling. The exterior of the pistol features light rust in a few locations, with the bottom of the grip being the most notable. The wood grips are in excellent shape and appear to be original to the era. They definitely do not smell “new” like modern reproduction grips do. The magazine is a reproduction that possesses a detailed wooden bottom. Hilariously, the color of the wood is strongly similar to that of rusted metal, and it has fooled observers on a few occasions. I personally own a Model 1920 Commercial in 7.65 Para/.30 Luger; like the one here, it has no grip safety and is fitted with the thicker barrel. With some experience, I can say that the 1920 is fun to own and shoot, but there are some caveats. For those with reproduction mags, I recommend soft-point ammunition for shooting. FMJs may simply “bounce” off the feed ramp at too steep an angle and cause a failure to feed. Both Fiocchi and Prvi Partisan produce 7.65mm Parabellum ammunition. Recoil-wise, .30-caliber Lugers are pleasant to shoot, even one-handed. As with any other Luger, the Model 1920 has a very nice trigger. The pistol comes with a decent aftermarket leather holster.
