Description:
Rare and elegant Francotte 12 bore bar-in-wood hammer pigeon gun no. 38985 made circa 1910-1924. Has the original Belgian proofs as well as later Birmingham and CIP proofs for 2-3/4” shotshells. Nicely engraved with about 85 percent residual case coloring. Double triggers and extractors. Has side clips and a hidden third fastener for strength. Rebounding hammers and gold nipples. Rolled edge trigger guard and articulated front trigger. Presented in its oak & leather case with unique two-piece wooden cleaning rod. In very good cosmetic and mechanical condition. Great handling flyers gun proofed for moden ammunition. Weighs 7lb 9oz.

The 30” nitro steel barrels were made with Whitworth steel and are chambered for (70mm) 2-3/4” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid hand stippled tapered rib which has a front ivory bead but is missing the middle bead. The top of the right barrel is inscribed “Auguste Francotte” and the top of the left is inscribed “Brevett * Liege”. The bottom of both barrels is inscribed “Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel”. The right barrel is marked at 18.6mm which is 0.732” and that is what it measures. The constriction is 0.024 for Modified Choke. The left barrel is also marked at 18.6mm which is 0.732” and that is what it measures. The constriction is 0.732 for Full choke. Perfect pigeon chokes!

The straight hand stock and splinter are made of nicely figured European walnut with crisp fine line checkering. Stock dimensions are 14-3/4” including a half-inch rubber pad by 1-3/8” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the right-handed shot.

Imagine what it would feel like to step up to the ring with this handsome and very rare Francotte at the ready! I have never come across a late model Francotte bar-in-wood hammer gun of this quality. In my opinion it is both shootable and collectible. Very responsive handling. Don’t let this one get out of the ring!
