Description:
There is not much information about this rectangular CS belt plate concerning manufacturer but a simple comparison to the letters on most Leech and Rigdon tongue in wreath CS belt plates shows this style of almost identical lettering. The conclusion which seems obvious to me is that Leech and Rigdon is the maker of these extremely rare plates. With a matching benchmarked plate and keeper and maybe 3 to 4 known examples, most without the keeper, this plate far exceeds the rarity scale of 10+.
These buckles are from an estate and were the only CW buckles and or Confederate items in that sale that the individual had. From what I see these are both the genuine item. If ANYONE can provide informarion to the contrary, Please do so and I will stand corrected.
The CS rectangular plate is benchmarked on both pieces with the matching numbers 017, each digit individually punched. This also appears to be ground recovered, with organic matter, quartz granules and other natural material adhered to the surface of the plate in recessed areas as part of the patina, This is easily seen with the magnification of a 10 power Lupe. An interesting condition of this rectangular plate is that the keeper was made to fit the tongue only one way correctly, backwards it will not fit the tongue. The tomgue appears to be a sepearately made piece braised to the back of the plate.
The CS tongue in wreath with pointed serifs looks to be a Virginia/Richmond style plate with a natural toning and patina to the brass and is NOT a ground recovered piece. This has a lot of evidence of use and wear as the pictures show.
Contact me to make an offer or with any questions you have. These can be purchased together or separately. I will consider all cash or cash and trade offers on these depending on what you offer. These will be shipped UPS ground insured. Thank you, Mark
