The J. Stevens Model 22-410 is the direct ancestor of the much more famous Savage Model 24. Its history is significant, particularly due to its role in World War II.
Here‚s a detailed look at the J. Stevens 22-410:
Origins (1938/1939):
The J. Stevens Model 22-410 was introduced by Stevens Arms, a company that had been acquired by Savage Arms in 1920 (though Stevens continued to operate as a semi-independent subsidiary until 1942). It appeared on the market in either 1938 or 1939 (references vary).
It was designed as an over-under combination gun, meaning it featured two barrels:
A .22 Long Rifle (.22LR) rifle barrel on the top.
A .410 gauge shotgun barrel on the bottom, typically chambered for 3-inch shells and with a full choke.
Design Features:
The 22-410 shared many characteristics with the later Savage Model 24:
Break-Action: It was a break-action firearm, meaning the barrels pivoted downward for loading and unloading.
Exposed Hammer: It had an exposed hammer that needed to be manually cocked for each shot.
Barrel Selector: A key feature was the barrel selector. On the original Stevens models, this was typically a small button or lever located on the right side of the receiver. Pushing it up would select the .22 rifle barrel, and pushing it down would select the .410 shotgun barrel.
