Description:
RARE Antique COLT Model 1851 Navy RICHARDS-MASON Conversion Revolver .38 LC

1 of only 1,000 Model 1851 Revolvers Converted

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with a rare Richards-Mason Conversion. The original percussion revolver was made circa the early 1850s. It was subsequently returned to the Colt factory for the Richards-Mason Conversion circa the mid-1870s, which made it possible to use cartridges, since the Smith & Wesson held Rollin White Patent had run out. This conversion was a good and successful one but did go head to head against Colt’s own Single Action Army, leading to relatively small numbers of Colt’s older percussion line being converted. The advantage with the conversion was, of course, low cost. It is generally believed that only about 1,000 of the Colt Navy-Navy cartridge conversions were performed on M1851 Navy revolvers, with the balance performed on M1861 Navy revolvers. It is believed that as few as only 100 of these conversions are now accounted for.

The overall condition is good. Shortened, engraved, and nickel finished during the period of use. The action is strong and functional. The ejector rod housing has an old brazed repair around the middle. The cap screw for the ejector rod is absent. The bore is dim with good rifling. The grip has been refinished and remains solid. Numbers match. A very neat piece!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .38 Long Colt (centerfire)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
