Description:
NSN, .42 CF, 32 1/4" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some traces of mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very well-made rifle that utilizes an interesting breech-loading mechanism that bears a cosmetic resemblance to the Austrian Werndl action, but functions closer to the British Snider in operation. The breechblock swings up and to the left exposing the chamber for loading with the last bit of distance under spring tension which then operates the thin steel extractor on the right side of the chamber mouth. The breech assembly has muted color case-hardening that now has a mostly plum-brown and gray patina throughout, although there are hints of the original color remaining on the hammer and "J. D. WILKINSON / PLATTSBURGH N.Y." marked lockplate (this marking is repeated on the top flat of the barrel just ahead of the breechblock). The barrel has about 60-70% of the original blue remaining, with silvering at the muzzle and along the edges of the barrel facets. The walnut stock has a pewter forend cap, and exhibits some minor handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered about the otherwise fine oil finish. What looks like a semi-circular chip missing from the left side of the stock at the breechblock is actually a clearance cut necessary to allow the opened breechblock to activate the extractor. The stock is fitted with a crescent brass buttplate, a thick iron trigger guard, and has two filled holes on the comb, possibly for a no longer present Vernier sight mount. The rifle is equipped with a spirit level front globe sight, a rear V-notch barrel sight (missing the elevator), and a rear Vernier target sight installed at the wrist. This very rifle is illustrated on page 1687 of "The New York State Firearms Trade Volume 4" by H.J. Swinney and Tom Rowe [2003]. J.D. Wilkinson was an Upstate New York inventor and gunmaker who moved back and forth between Plattsburgh and the nearby town of Keeseville (16 miles away) from 1860 & 1874. While he has no definitive connection to either Orville M. Robinson, or the Adirondack Firearms Co., he may have had a familial relationship with Daniel Wilkinson, who was one of the company’s listed employees. There was almost certainly a connection with G.C. Wilkinson, another gunmaker in the Plattsburgh & Keeseville area who operated at the same time.
