Here we present an antique Dallas, Texas Shipped Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver, made in 1894 in Hartford, Connecticut, and sent with two others to E.A. Worden, an old Texas dealer, per the archival letter. In 1894 Dallas was Texas’ largest metropolis at about 38,000 residents. As such, it was a great place to get supplied for those living in the vast expanses of Texas such as ranchers and cowboys.
The Colt Model 1878 was Colt’s second entry, just after the Model 1877, into double action revolvers. While the ’77 was made for several Colt specific cartridges such as the .38 and .41 Colt, the ’78 was made to chamber many of Winchester’s most popular cartridges, such as the .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20, as well as the US government’s cartridge of choice, the .45 Colt.
The overall condition is very good. Refinished in nickel. The action is strong in both double and single action. The bore is reflective with strong rifling. The grips are solid. The numbers match on the grip frame and cylinder. Batch numbers matchon the frame and loading gate. The interior of the grips have a bit of inscription with the right panel being marked “AX 11” and the left “Dec 19 23 WIM”.
