Description:
Pre-1864 WINCHESTER M88 .308 WIN C&R Lever Action Rifle WEAVER SCOPE/SLING

Hunting Rifle with MARBLE’S “GAME GETTER” Mount

Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 88 Lever Action Rifle manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut in its first year of production in 1955. The Model 88 had a steady run with around 280,000-plus copies made from its initial production in 1955 until its discontinuation in 1973. The hands-down favorite caliber was the .308 WIN at 110,289 rifles made. Second in popularity was the .243 WIN with 74,294 produced. The 358 Win. edged out the .284 Win. with 35,636 vs. 35,330 rifles made respectively. In all, just 28,330 Model 88s were produced as carbines.
The Model 88 was a completely new design in lever actions. It had no visible hammer with the bolt rotating when operated by the lever, locking up with three lugs just aft of the chamber similar to a bolt action. It fed from a 4-shot detachable box magazine. The rifles featured a 22-inch barrel, with a 19-inch carbine available as well, which had a featherweight profile leading to the rifle’s light weight of 7-1/4 pounds. Cartridges ejected from the side, allowing a scope to be mounted center over the bore. To cap it off the one-piece walnut stock with a pistol grip borrowed much of its lines from the bolt-action rifles of the day, sleek and fast-handling. Winchesters marketing guys even called it the “bolt action rifle with a lever.”

The pre-1964 Model 88s were manufactured from 1955 through 1963 after which time significant changes in the design and manufacture of the rifles were made. Pre-1964 Model 88s are better received by the general population due to the quality of these earlier model rifles.
