The Model 12 was designed by Winchester engineer T.C. Johnson and was a significant evolution from John M. Browning‚s earlier, external-hammer Model 1897. The goal was to create a more modern, hammerless, and robust pump-action shotgun. It was introduced in 1912 and initially referred to as the Winchester Model 1912. The \"1912\" was later officially dropped in 1919, and it simply became the Model 12.
