Description:
Guns Listing ID: 544658

A Field Grade LC Smith shotgun is the most common and affordable model produced by the L.C. Smith Gun Company, designed primarily for general-purpose use like hunting and informal shooting—hence the name \"Field Grade.\"

?? Key Features of the Field Grade L.C. Smith:

Feature - Description
Grade - Lowest/entry-level grade (introduced ~1912)
Configuration - Side-by-side (SxS) double-barrel shotgun
Gauge - Common in 12, 16, and 20 gauge
Action - Sidelock (trademark of LC Smith guns)
Barrels - Steel (usually Armor Steel or Nitro Steel)
Finish - Plain blued barrels, no engraving except light border work
Stock - American walnut, often straight or pistol-grip with modest checkering
Chokes - Fixed chokes (often Full/Mod, Mod/IC, etc.)
Ejectors - Usually extractors; ejectors optional and less common

?? Field Grade vs. Higher Grades
Grade Engraving Wood Quality Extras
Field Grade - Minimal Basic walnut Few embellishments
Ideal Grade - Moderate Better figure Engraving, better fit/finish
Specialty Grades (Trap, Crown, etc.) - Ornate Fancy walnut Highly engraved, gold inlays, special ribs, checkering
So if a Field Grade is a “workhorse," then the higher grades were more like “presentation" or competition guns.

?? History & Production
Introduced: ~1912, when L.C. Smith updated its catalog and streamlined its grading system.
Produced Until: ~1950 (under Hunter Arms Co., later Marlin)
Serial Numbers: Often start in the 50,000–200,000+ range (but not strictly sequential)

?? Collectibility
Though not rare, Field Grades are beloved for their American craftsmanship, and many shooters still use them today. The fact that they are sidelock shotguns (a rarer design in American guns) adds to their appeal.

An LC Smith shotgun with serial number S-32536 is most likely a pre-1950 Field Grade sidelock side-by-side, but nailing down its exact manufacture year, grade, barrel length, gauge, and precise value requires a Research Letter from the LC Smith Collectors Association or the Cody Museum—you‚ll need to submit that serial number with gauge details and a fee (about $50–75)
