The 1884 Springfield Trapdoor rifle was a design improvement of the earlier 1873 rifles and 1866 rifles. The most notable improvements were in the sights, which were modified to improve long range accuracy.

The Springfield Model 1873 was the Army’s standard issue rifle during the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s.  The rifle also saw service in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. They were also amomg those used iby then LtCol George Custer in the infamous  battle of the LIttle Bighorn.

The Model 1873 carbine barrel band has a stacking swivel. A total of 216,230 Model 1873 rifles and 20,028 Model 1873 carbines were produced.
