Period Metallic Cartridge Update to Muzzle Loader
Here we present an antique Long Rifle with a Metallic Cartridge Breechloading Conversion to .42 Rimfire. This rifle is a fantastic illustration of just how the muzzleloading period met the modern period of metallic cartridges. This probably dates to the 1860s or 1870s, which is part of what makes this rare. After the American Civil War there was a glut of military arms, many of them considered on the cutting edge, and a plethora of makers trying to transition from military arms to sustainability through civilian sales, which made conversions like this one usually unnecessary. However, clearly someone loved Old Betsy here and gave her a new lease on life by bringing her into the modern age.
The overall condition is good. The refinished barrel has brown patina with bright gray patina at the breech. Replaced barrel screw, hammer screw. The bore retains some shine with somewhat worn rifling. Solid stock has been refinished with a glue repair at the forend. The hammer intermittently stops at half cock when the trigger is pulled.
