Description:
From London's most famous gunmaker comes this handsome Boss sidelock ejector with 30” nitro steel barrels; sharp full coverage Sumner engraving; and a very highly figured French walnut stock and forearm. Boss no. 4486 was made in 1897 and is Number 2 of a pair. Has automatic safety, double triggers, auto ejectors, self-opener, residual case coloring, and gold line cocking indicators. It is presented in its oak & leather case with maker’s label and snap caps, oil bottle, rosewood two-piece cleaning rod, tool heads, and a key. Easy to carry and swing for a day afield or at the range at 6lb 12oz.

The 30” sleeved nitro steel barrels are proofed for 1-1/8oz loads and chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, low pressure 2-1/2” shotshells are available in the US from ARMUSA, Game Bore, and RST Shells. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The inscription of maker's name and address on the rib is worn and barely legible but could easily be “picked up” by a talented engraver. The bores are shiny and bright but the bluing shows a number of areas of thinning and wear, perhaps from a case. The right barrel is marked at 18.6mm bore diameter or 0.732 and measures 0.734. It has a constriction of 0.012 for Improved Cylinder choke. The left barrel is also marked at 18.6mm bore diameter or 0.732 and measures 0.733. It has a constriction of 0.026 for Modified choke. The Minimum Wall Thickness for both barrels is 0.029.

The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are crafted from very highly figured French walnut. The checkering is in good condition. The butt ends with a half-inch checkered horn buttplate. There is a small repair to the left edge of the forearm wood near where it meets the barrel. Stock dimensions are 15” including the one-inch Pachmayr Old English pad by 1-3/8” by 2”. Slightly cast-off for the right handed shooter. A  half-inch horn buttplate came fitted to the gun which reduces the length of pull to 14-1/2" and is included. See photo.
