SAUER & SOHN “Tell” 8.15x46Rmm Single Shot Rifle Engraved ROARING TWENTIES Era “MODELL TELL” Rifle Here we present a C&R John P. Sauer & Sohn “Tell” Single Shot Rifle made in 1928 in Suhl, Germany. Though there have been many questions over the years, “Tell” was not a gun manufacturer. Somewhere around 1900, J.P.Sauer & Sohn brought out a light, single barrel break open rifle with a single bite, hook type underlever, similar to some of the British Rook & Rabbit rifles. Sauer & Sohn named this design their “Modell Tell” after William Tell, the Swiss national hero and medieval crossbow sharpshooter. Soon this design was widely copied by many in the gun trade. By World War I, Tellbuchse had become a general term for this type of break-open rifle. All of these gunmakers offered chamberings from the .22 Long Rifle Rimfire to the 9.3x72R. The 6.5x52R, also known as the 25-35 Winchester. was very popular in these rifles.” The series of ‘Tell’ rifles were made until 1936, when it was superseded by the dual-purpose drop barrel models. The first Sauer company was founded in 1751 by Lorenz Sauer in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany, this locality being known as Waffenstqadt Suhl in the past because of its many gunmakers. In 1815 Johann-Gottlob Sauer started managing the firm and in 1835 Johann Paul Sauer became manager. It was in 1840 that Johann Paul and his son, Lorenz Sauer created the new name and trademark of J.P. Sauer & Sohn. J. P. Sauer and Sohn is the oldest recorded firearms manufacturer in Germany and is still active today. The overall condition is very good. This example is refinished in blue with a case-colored receiver.
