The longarm is marked with the addorsed salmon crest and inventory number 15 for the famous arms collection of the Princes zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck at Schloss Dyck which remained virtually intact since the mid-17th century until it was sold in the 1990s. The wheellock rifle was developed in Europe in the late 15th or early 16th century, though exactly who developed it is unknown. Leonardo da Vinci produced an early sketch of a wheellock mechanism mounted on a rifle as part of a series of military design commissioned for the Duke of Milan somewhere around 1490. Another early depiction of the wheellock was drawn by Martin Loffelholz of Nuremberg, Germany in 1505, though it shows as being used as a tinder lighter rather than a rifle. Here is an uncommon opportunity to own a very scarce wheellock rifle in Fine condition! The overall condition is fine. Original gray patina. The bore is bright with deep rifling. The frizzen and triggers function, but the lock is not tested. Antique ivory inlays with many having hand applied designs. The wood is in fine shape overall, but a split on the butt is present. The heel stud is absent. Some chipping is found on the horn buttplate. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30-3/4 inches.
