Description:
Handsome and very nice condition Purdey sidelock ejector from the mid-1890’s with Beesley self-opening action, disc set strikers, and hidden third fastener. Double triggers, auto safety, arrow cocking indicators. The engraving is in great condition with some residual case coloring on the lock plates and elsewhere. Very highly figured French walnut stock and splinter forearm. Purdey number 14952 was made in 1895 and is tight on face with strong well-timed ejectors. Presented in its oak and leather case with Purdey snap caps, Purdey oil bottle, two-piece cleaning rod and tool heads. With its heavier weight at 7lb 1oz and a third bite it was made to handle heavier loads thus making it a great gun for clays as well as game.
The 30” Whitworth steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and are topped by a raised, concave tapered gamestyle rib. The rib inscription reads “J. Purdey & Sons . Audley House. South Audley Street . London “. Also inscribed on the rib is “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel”. The bluing is in very good condition and the bores are shiny and bright. The barrels are black powder proofed but have good wall thickness making this great condition Purdey perfectly safe to shoot using low pressure ammunition. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, low pressure 2-1/2” cartridges are readily available in the US from Clays Ammo, Game Bore, and RST Shells. The right barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The left barrel is bored 0.732 and has a constriction of 0.025. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. Cylinder and Modified choking was a fairly common choice in the late Victorian era and is actually very effective for today’s upland gunning for quail, grouse and woodcock.
The straight grip stock and splinter forearm have recently been refinished and are made of very highly figured French walnut. The traditional flat top checkering is crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-5/8” including a 3/4” red Silvers pad by 1-5/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the righthand shot.
