Description:
1790s ENGRAVED Spanish Antique MIQUELET “ESCOPETA” Shotgun w/MADRID STOCK

Late 1700s to Early 1800s Spanish EIBAR Longarm

Here we present an antique Spanish Miquelet “Escopeta” Shotgun with a Madrid Stock, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s in Eibar, Spain. This Spanish Flintlock longarm, known as an Escopeta, is made with a Miquelet lock, a predecessor, or alternative, to the standard flintlock design in use throughout most of Europe. It shows typical late-18th Century rough construction using iron mounts. As Spain maintained many colonies at that time these muskets were scattered all over the globe and as a result are very hard to find today.
The miquelet was an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the early twentieth century A “Miquelet” is a type of flintlock developed in Spain. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Ital, the Balkans, North Africa and the Ottoman Empire from the late 16th to the mid-19th centuries. The miquelet lock, with its combined battery and pan cover was the final innovative link that made the flintlock mechanism possible. It proved to be both the precursor and companion to what we now call the "true" flintlock.

Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid-19th centuries. Later they were seen in percussion form, either as originally produced, or converted. The term miquelet lock was not recorded until the 19th century, long after the appearance of the mechanism in the 16th century, and is of uncertain origin. One commonly held view is that it was coined by British troops in the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) that had been assigned to the Peninsular Army of the Duke of Wellington.

The overall condition is good. Deep plum patina has settled in on the metal parts. The action is strong. The stock is solid with a little movement around the forend and a split around the wrist. The bore is dark, but good for its age.
