Description:
c1904 mfr. ADAMS EXPRESS CO. Sidearm IVER JOHNSON ARMS Revolver C&R .38 S&W

COURIERS via STEAMBOAT & RAILROAD est. 1840

Here we present a C&R Cased Adams Express Company Marked Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works 2nd Model Safety Automatic Hammerless Revolver in .38 S&W, made circa 1904 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Iver Johnson was a U.S. firearms, bicycle, and motorcycle manufacturer from 1871 to 1993. The company shared the same name as its founder, Norwegian-born Iver Johnson (1841–1895). Iver Johnson & Martin Bye both cut their teeth with Ethan Allen, then started their own company in 1871. The revolver was a small, sturdy, well-built self-defense weapon, ideal for potent conceal and carry in the early years of the tumultuous 20th Century continuing on into the Roaring Twenties.

In 1840, Alvin Adams was an enterprising businessman who started a new company with little more than “two men, a boy and a wheelbarrow”. The primary business was the carrying of small parcels, bank drafts and other valuables between Boston, Worcester, Norwich, New London and New York City utilizing steamboats and railroads. The business routes expanded rapidly and at the start of the gold rush, a new trans-continental business venture was started. In 1854, the Adams Express Company was formally incorporated on July 1. Adams Express was a combination of Adams & Company plus eight other express companies. The initial public offering was July 1, 1854. The Adams Express company was valued at $1 million. Even today, 185 years later, Adams is still in existence.
The left side of the barrel is marked “PROPERTY OF ADAMS EXPRESS CO.”.
