This is a VERY RARE Smith and Wesson model 20-2 chambered in .38 Special.
This is one of only 50 that were shipped to the Austin Police dept in 1964.
According to online sources there were fewer than 100 Heavy Duty with the 20-2 model marking made before discontinued in 1966.
The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson dates this serial number to be from 1961-62.
The back strap is marked "Austin P.D. 255".
The pinned barrel is 4 inches long with a perfect bore.
It has a 6-shot fluted cylinder with checkered cylinder release.
The back of the cylinder is marked 255 735 with a star.
The timing and lock up are perfect based on visual inspection.
The nickel finish is original and is in great shape.
It has a color case hammer and trigger. The ejector rod is shrouded.
The inside of the yoke cut is marked “MOD 20-2”.
Inside the ejector rod shroud is 255735 with a star.
The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The side plate has the “S&W” logo.
The right side of the barrel is marked “.38 S.&W. Special CTG.”.
The right side of the frame is marked with the four line Marcas Registradas address.
The butt of the frame is marked with the serial number “S255735”.
It has a half round blade front sight, fixed notch rear sight.
It has 2-piece diamond checkered walnut grips with S&W emblems.
The grips are diamond checkered S&W, fantastic condition with non matching number on the underside.
This comes with a GOLD, period correct Smith and Wesson factory box marked "Smith and Wesson 38/44 Heavy Duty Revolver (grease pencil Nickel) 4 inch barrel.
There are no markings on the underside of the box.
This revolver qualifies as a curio and relic and ship where legally allowed.
This revolver would make a great addition to any firearms collection.
