Description:
#46058, Gebruder Merkel, Suhl: A Classic 16 Bore Model 203E Sidelock Ejector Hand Detachable Locks Made in 1957, Complete with a spare barrel in 16 over 7x57R done by Krieghoff in 1959 with their factory claw mounts and scoped, This piece came in from West Germany and we can only presume in 1957 the gun went to West Germany and the owner there did want to send it back to East Germany as Merkel remained in the East. Krieghoff went to the West after WWII and I am sure the owner did not want to send it back to Communist East Germany with all the presumed complications. If it wasn't marked Krieghoff you couldn't tell as it is equal in quality to the Original Merkel. The 16 Bore barrels are Kersten cross bolt, 28" Solid Rib Ejector Bohler Stahl barrels, .668 .024 & .032" (Imp.Mod. & Full), Original 2 3/4" chambers, The 16 x 7x57R top barrel is .675 .034" (Full), Original 2 3/4" chambers, These combo barrels are 23 3/4" Solid Rib with 1 folding sight and factory claw mounts, Factory installed Zeiss Diavari-Z 1.5-6x42 scope with rail mounted claw mounts, The Krieghoff barrels have both their serial number and the Merkel serial number, Bolstered frame, Double triggers with the front articulated, Cocking indicators, 3 piece game forend, Open pistol grip stock at 14 5/8 x 1 1/2 x 2 9/16" over a 5/8" Decelerator pad, Cast-off for the right hand, 6 lbs. 13 oz. as a 16 Bore, 7 lbs. 5 oz. with the 16 x 7x57R barrels and 8 lbs. 9 oz. with the scope, Very nice wood with nice color and contrast of black & browns, Sling swivels on both sets of barrels, Cheekpiece, 96% coverage of 1957 scroll engraving that is absolutely Pre-War Quality, This is definitely Pre-War quality and execution, The original barrel blue at 98% on the 16 bore barrels and 96% on the combo barrels, The original frame finish at 99%, The original wood finish at 94% with very light handling marks, The checkering is sharp & crisp and remains at 99%, All 4 bores are excellent plus and they look like they did in 1957. The whole is cased in a leather trunk. This piece is not one of the modern Merkel's and is a Suhl made gun. You can investigate buying a recent Merkel O/U and see what you pay and what you get. These early 1950's Merkel's are for all intents and purposes no different than the Pre-War guns.
