This 1981 Cosmi Lusso 12-gauge is a remarkable example of the legendary Italian break-action semi-automatic shotgun, combining precision engineering with exquisite hand engraving. Built on Cosmi’s unique semi-automatic design, it can be configured with a 2+1 capacity using the magazine cutoff for migratory bird shooting, or a full 7+1 capacity when unrestricted. The 25.5 inch vent-matted rib barrel is choked Modified (.026") and fitted with both a silver mid-bead and silver front bead. Measurements include a drop at comb of 1.5 inches, a drop at heel of 2 inches, a length of pull of 14 inches, and an overall weight of 7 pounds 15.5 ounces.
The shotgun is in very good overall condition with faint wear typical of careful use. The bore is clear, the action is smooth and locks up tight, and the trigger is crisp. Mechanically, it remains excellent. The blued top receiver and barrel retain 98% of their original finish, showing only light handling consistent with its age.
What sets this Cosmi apart is the exhibition-grade Bulino engraving executed by master engraver Fabbrizioli. On the left side of the bottom receiver, a lifelike portrait of a short-haired pointer is depicted with two flushing quail in a rolling hills landscape. The right side features two quail in flight across a mountain scene. On the bottom, a marsh landscape contains two ducks in the foreground and four ducks in the distance, all rendered in fine Bulino technique. Surrounding these game scenes are delicate floral bouquets and fine scroll engraving, with the top tang fully covered in scroll and vine engraving. The work is signed by Fabbrizioli next to trigger, one of Italy’s most renowned engravers.
The stock and forend are made from exhibition-grade walnut with a rich, dark flowing grain. Sharp checkering enhances the pistol grip, forend, and butt. A gold oval set into the grip cap is engraved with the initials “FZ,” and the stock is finished with an orange recoil pad.
The Cosmi shotgun is revered as the only luxury semi-automatic gun in the world. Its elegance and technical brilliance stem from a system of over 100 machined components, assembled without screws and finished entirely by hand.
