This percussion rifle is a perfectly balanced gun and is considered by black-powder hunters to be the ideal rifle for a reliable and quick second shot. .50 cal has six-groove rifling. The nominal 29" barrel (measured at 28.5") has a twist rate of 1:24, so it can shoot sabots and conical bullets (like powerbelts). The bores are good, and the wood is in very good condition. Uses #11 caps, and nipples are 1/4x28. The barrels are clean and rust-free. The original leather sling is original and is stamped "Trail Guns Armory Texas" and "Kodiak" and remains in perfect condition.
The barrels retain 95-96% of their original finish with a few small areas of negligible freckling or light scratches at the breech area surrounding the nipples, which are not visible in general appearance.. The locks, hammers, and tangs are all finished in a bright, gunmetal gray and have hand-engraved foliate decorations throughout, while the lock plates have acid-etched Kodiak bear vignettes. The checkered straight grip walnut stock rates very good and featuring a rounded cheek-piece, and having a few very minor handling wear marks scattered about the surface. Hand checkering is 100% and the rifle is equipped with a ramped bead front sight and a two-folding leaf rear sight. The original brass-tipped ramrod is included. This is a very nice, percussion big bore double rifle, and rates excellent condition overall. The gun was literally used by my Dad on one hunt in New Mexico in 1985 and has remained in my storage vault since that time.
It would be a great deer and elk rifle with a fast second shot capability. Both barrels shoot minute-of-paper plate at 25 yds. Double rear leaf sight, one each for short/long range. This was the newest 50 cal 29" Kodiak model of this gun type which when through Trails Guns Armory, was over $1400.00
