Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, 1906, 16 Gauge, 6lbs. 8oz., Chokes SK/M; M/F, LOP 14", DAH 2 3/4", DAC 1 1/2"
Serial Number:  205170

Those who study L.C. Smith guns recognize the “Pre-1913” Elsies are the best of the Hunter Arms Company’s offerings, produced when double guns were profitable and the maker could afford to attend to the smallest details.  The sculpting of the frame, the wood-to-metal fit, the careful heading up of the stock to the action resulting in no issues of splitting or cracking, the perfectly cut checkering, the gracefully hand engraved game scenes and scroll all come together to exemplify the early American gunmaker’s art.  They only made 253 Grade 3 guns in 16ga., only about 30 or so with the graceful, eye pleasing English style stock, and only a handful with factory fitted second set of barrels. There are fewer than 200 left on the planet, as many have been lost or fallen into disrepair.  Here we have one, sn205170 made in 1906, and WHAT A GUN IT IS.  Study the detailed photos of this gun and you will see a hand-filed, gracefully contoured frame where the top of the action flows into the barrels, the hand-engraved scroll and game scenes carved into steel, perfect screws, 70% aged factory case color, highly figured English walnut showing honey background, dark streaks and smokey curls, profuse fiddleback, superb hand cut checkering, and superb wood-to-metal fit.  The satin oil finish is flawless and the vintage Silvers pad is visually pleasing and functional.  Both sets of barrels have tight ribs, fit tight on hinge pin and breech face, have mirror shiny bores, versatile choked SK/M and M/F, and show a deep rust blue.  THE SECOND SET OF BARRELS (MARKED OOE GRADE) WERE ADDED TO THE GUN AT THE FACTORY AS THE INDIVIDUAL STAMPS ON BOTH SETS OF BARRELS EXACTLY MATCH THE STAMPS ON THE ACTION.  They were all stamped with the same set of stamps at the factory.  The mechanics are in perfect working order, as this is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN; we stripped the action and forend iron to the small parts, Ultrasonic cleaned all, scrubbed to clean metal, inspected all for function and integrity, lubricated and reassembled, now with a 90-day mechanical warranty.  This is a $450 service in our shop.  PRESENTLY IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND 2 ½” 16GA. SHELLS.  BECAUSE OF THIS, VFI GUNSMITHS HAVE CAREFULLY MEASURED THE BARREL WALL THICKNESS AHEAD OF THE CHAMBER AND HAVE LENGTHENED THE CHAMBERS TO 2 ¾” AND EXTENDED THE FORCING CONES TO 1 ½” TAPERS SO THAT YOU CAN SHOOT MODERN 2 ¾” LOADS THROUGH THIS GUN.  This is a $440 service in our shop.   This gun needs nothing but a date in the field…it is ready to go for another 119 years.  We have housed this L.C. Smith in a vintage leather case, custom fit to the gun so the action and barrel sets cannot move within, protected the areas where metal typically shreds felt by using color matched pieces of leather, added trade label and accessories for a perfect case for travel and show (a $1850 case in our shop).  This gun will cover all your upland bird hunts with versatile chokes.  Just in time for the upcoming bird season, a rare pre-1913 L.C. Smith will only go up in value as you enjoy its use.  Don’t miss out on this beautiful 2-barrel set.  See the specifications below.  Thanks for looking!
