About Us: Gale River Traders was established in the early 1980’s in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We started out buying, selling, and trading at the large & frequent gun shows Colorado was known for back then. After relocating to New Hampshire in 1995, we established our online business, specializing in vintage gun parts, militaria, accoutrements, and related ephemera. Our goal is to provide you with quality items at reasonable prices, and moreover, to help you find that elusive part that restores your gun, or that scarce item to enhance your collection. In addition to selling, we are always open to buying & trading, and reasonable offers are always considered! Thanks for looking!

Description:
Offered for your consideration is an authentic U.S. Pattern 1857 military rifle sling. This is one of the early 2-piece slings that were made by splicing two of the shorter M1855 and/or M1861 slings together, making a longer sling to fit the M1873 rifle. Measures approximately 68" in length, with tooled edges, a fixed leather loop at one end, and a single flat brass hook at the other. Has a latent U.S. Ordnance Dept. Inspector stamp around the first punch hole on the hook end. The leather shows normal wear and handling marks typical for a 150 year-old military sling. The brass hardware has some minor verdigris. The stitching on the leather flap that encloses the hook is in very nice condition, as are the stitching on the front and back of the splice, and the fixed loop. Overall a fine example of these scarce transitional slings, which were made in-theatre out of necessity, until the leather companies who held U.S. Government contracts got tooled up and started producing the longer slings to go with the M1873 rifle, which was already seeing action in the field!

Note: Condition on these antique leather slings and similar accoutrements can be  subjective, so please examine photos and determine condition for yourself. Any questions? Just ask! And as always, FREE SHIPPING to your door!!

Please note that all of my items are subject to sale elsewhere, so if you are interested in this sling you should consider buying it now before someone else does! :) Thanks for looking..
