Description:
RARE Antique NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. VOLCANIC No. 1 Pistol .31 cal. ANTEBELLUM

1 of Fewer than 850; With Factory Scroll Engraving

Here we present a Rare Antique New Haven Arms Company Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol, made circa 1857 in New Haven, Connecticut, with a total production estimated at fewer than 850 of these No. 1 pistols. This pistol features the octagonal barrel with integral magazine, pinched blade front sight fitted at the muzzle, “NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14. 1854” two-line address on top, and open scroll and border engraving on the frame. This one has a period nickel finish that would have been done either by a dealer or by an original user. Matching numbers.

Volcanic firearms are historically significant and represent an important step in the development of American repeating firearms and self-contained cartridges. The lever action and integral spring-loaded magazine introduced with Volcanic pistols and carbines served as the basic design for the Henry rifle and the subsequent Winchester Model 1866, 1873, and 1876 rifles. Oliver Winchester’s investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. This was the ultimate success of the famous and rare Volcanic design.

This pistol was designed to use so-called “rocket ball” ammunition first developed by Walter Hunt in the late 1840s. It is equipped with a tubular magazine under the barrel, which is loaded from the front by simply compressing the spring and follower, then swiveling the muzzle to the side. The frame is decorated with the factory open scroll engraving that was standard on these pistols.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina on the brass with factory engraving; period nickel finish on the barrel, magazine, hammer, lever, and trigger. The lever operates the lifter. The hammer on this piece must be manually set. The action of the trigger & hammer are excellent. The bore is dim with good rifling. The grips are solid, showing honest period use. Numbers match, including the grips.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
