Description:
A feature-packed post-war .22 rifle, the Mossberg 151M is a very interesting specimen of American .22 shooting. As Mossberg helped to train fresh US military recruits during the Second World War, the brand name helped carry its success in the post-war era with homecoming soldiers. The 151M—made only between 1947 and 1948—was designed to be a competitor to Winchester's more-expensive semi-automatic Model 74. Even though the Mossberg was less expensive, it packed a lot more features into the gun. The 151M had an advantage in magazine capacity, holding 15 rounds of .22 Long Rifle in its stock-fed tubular magazine. The 151M also had a host of sighting options: a hooded front sight had four selectable sight posts. An elevation-adjustable open rear sight has a user-selectable V-notch, square-notch, or peep sight. Or, a fully adjustable peep sight is also attached with three options of eye relief and can swivel out of the way to use the open sights. Finally, the rifle features a dovetail-esque "tip-off" rail for mounting scopes. Perhaps most notably, the Model 151M featured a two-piece Mannlicher-style stock. The stock was made in two parts joined by a sheet metal piece to keep costs low, but offer the premium aesthetics of the full-length Mannlicher stock (popular on high-end hunting rifles at the time). The stock also features a raised cheek rest and pistol grip. Finally, this rifle includes the original sling and its original vintage quick-disconnect sling swivels. This rifle would be considered a 151M-A, based off the inclusion of the open rear sight and the metal buttplate. The barrel on this rifle is actually in very good condition, with no rust or pitting. The action operates smoothly and with ease and nothing appears to be mechanically wrong with the gun. The stock does have some mild scratches and marks from usage—not uncommon for a .22 rifle nearly 80 years old. This rifle is a fine example of mid-century .22s popular of the times, with a wide swath of useful features built into one gun and likely has years of shooting left in it. .22 Long Rifle
