The Model 58 S&W was designed as a police duty gun from the ground up. Essentially a strengthened version of the Model 10. The Model 57 had adjustable sights, the 58 fixed sights, the 57 had barrel length choices, the 58 came in 4-inch, the 57 had target grips, the 58 had slim "duty grips." and the list could go on... This one is in really good condition with good blue, light wear, and doesn't appear to have been fired much. The .41 Mag was, and is, an excellent cartridge for intermediate hunting, or defense... when you use appropriate loads. The cartridge was designed with two loads in mind, a high performance 1300 fps load that was "robust" at both ends, and a duty load around 1150 fps, that was actually quite pleasant to shoot. Unfortunately, this excellent catridge was doomed by its own success, as police didn't really like shooting the hunting load due to recoil and over-penetration problems. And the hunting public already had the .44 Mag. When police surplused the pistols, they opted for the .357 Mag or one of the semi-autos being marketed. The .41 Mag remains a wonderful cartridge, and suitably loaded for the intended target, will serve well for hunting and defense. .41 Remington Magnum
