Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Co. .22 LR The Woodsman Match Target "U.S. PROPERTY" Marked.
Colt introduced the Match Target version of The Woodsman in 1938. It differed from the standed Woodsman that came with round tapered barrel; the Match Target had a heavy, flat sided barrel w/ the Match Target logo roll-marked on the left side.
Proudction of The Woodsman line ceased in 1941 as the U.S. entered WW II, but Colt is said to have delivered 4,000 Match Target Models to the U.S. Government between 1941 and 1944.
The Match Targets made in this group have an "MT" prefix in the serial number that ranges from MT1 to MT15100. These guns are also roll-Marked "U.S. PROPERTY" below The Woodsman logo on the frame and have brown two-piece checkered hard rubber grips w/ Colt logos that extends flat below the grip frame. Includes original magazine that is roll marked "COLT .22" on the magazine's base plate.
The gun pictured here is serial number: MT14524 (ca. 1943) and is in very high condition for one of these 4,000 "U.S. PROPERTY" marked guns, as they typically saw a lot of use during their service and after they were sold on the surplus market after the war. The left side of the frame is has a "G.H.D." inspection mark for Lt. Col. Guy H. Drewry, ad well as the various Colt factory "VT" inside a triangle and "P" proofmarks and "37" on the right side of the trigger guard.
This pistol retains about 70% to 75% of its original high polished blue finish. The bore remains excellent and there are no cracks or chips in the grips.
Overall, a very good example of a "U.S. PROPERTY" marked Match Target.
