The Model 1863 was just a minor upgrade over the 1861—sometimes considered a variant of it. It came in two versions: Type I, which replaced flat barrel bands with oval clamping bands, and Type II (sometimes called 1864), which reintroduced band springs and had a single leaf rear sight. About 255,000 of these were made during 1864–65. This piece is a type I. During the Civil War, both North and South relied on imported rifles until the North adopted the .58 Caliber Springfield, which helped turn the tide by making regular soldiers more accurate. The 1861 was the “everyman’s” rifle—around 1.5 million made, mostly at Springfield. It was revolutionary because it shot the Minié ball, a conical projectile that expanded for better accuracy, and it was the first with iron sights. Soon after the war, the U.S. moved from muzzle-loaders to breech-loading rifles, ending the era of the musket as the standard firearm in America. That’s the quick history of a real game-changer. The overall condition is good. This example is refinished in nickel. Robust action. The stock is solid and has been re-oiled with a small repair forward of the lock near the barrel. The modern leather sling is in good shape. Good bayonet. The bore is dark and good with serviceable rifling. Legible markings. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
