Description:
General Specs: Colt, 1863, .44 CAL, 43oz., 8″ Barrel
Serial Number:  114518

The 1860 Colt Army Revolver is arguably one of the most iconic handguns of the U.S. Civil War. The Colt Model 1860 army revolver was manufactured from 1860 through 1873. The total production consisted of more than 200,000. Cap & ball and .44 caliber revolver was a primary handgun used by Union troops (and others) during the American Civil War, it was valued for its reliability and six shot capacity. In the years leading up to that terrible conflict Colt had been doing business south of the Mason-Dixon Line, but when war broke out in April of 1861, he immediately turned his attention to the needs of the Union forces. This is one of the approximately 127,000 purchased by the U.S. Government to arm the Union troops in response to the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War.

This example was manufactured in 1863, has serial number 114518, and comes with a Civil War leather holster. The holster is in great condition and is believed to be one of those which were standard-issued to cavalrymen carrying the Colt Army revolver. The overall finish of this revolver has mostly gone to patina; however, the naval engagement scene engraved on the cylinder of all Model 1860 Army revolvers remains visible. The barrel bears strong rifling and the bore is excellent. At some point in its history, this pistols ram rod has received attention from a blacksmith, but the reason is lost to time! This example’s frame has only three screws as opposed to the more commonly seen four-screw frame, indicating that this revolver was not designed to accommodate a detachable shoulder stock. The cylinder is un-converted and remains equipped as a .44 caliber cap & ball revolver. The brass trigger guard and front strap retain approximately 95% of their original finish, there are some marks on the trigger plate. The one-piece walnut grips are excellently fitted onto the frame and appear to have had the bottom edges rounded, a modification possibly made by the Solder who carried this pistol during their service. The mechanics are excellent and the trigger pull is crisp as ever. This is a unique opportunity to own one of the iconic, original, and un-converted Colt Model 1860 Army cap & ball revolvers complete with a Civil War leather holster, a pair of items with immense historical value.
