Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver, made in 1895 in Hartford, Connecticut. It is often referred to as the “Frontier” or the “Double Action Army” revolver. The Model 1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt’s factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. It was similar in design to the Colt Model 1877.
The 1878 Double Action Frontier was a much larger and more reliable, robust version of the Model 1877 Lightning and Thunderer, Colt’s first double action revolvers. The 1878 Frontier also offered a much more comprehensive array of calibers, compared to the 1877’s three offerings. This allowed this weapon to be used as a companion to the likes of the Winchester Model 1873 in the same chambering.
The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong and is double action only. The bore is dim with serviceable rifling. The back of the right grip panel is chipped but otherwise the grips are solid and showing use.
