Description:
In 1956, Ruger released the original Blackhawk revolver chambered in a brand-new cartridge, the .44 Magnum. Elmer Keith, a famous outdoorsman and writer of the early 1900s, had developed a new revolver cartridge based off of the .44 Special with the help of Remington and Smith & Wesson. While S&W released the first revolver in .44 Magnum with the Model 29 in early 1956, Ruger was quick to follow with their popular single-action Blackhawk—a revolver imitating the Colt 1851 Navy and Single-Action Army in grip shape (which Ruger called their "XR3 frame"). However, the original Blackhawk was not designed for the more powerful cartridge, even with its larger "flat-top" frame (enlarged purely to fit a larger cylinder), and a new frame had to be designed to more properly handle the new magnum. Thus led to the development of the large-frame Ruger Redhawk and Super Blackhawk revolvers. Even with new properly-designed guns now available from Ruger, many Ruger collectors and fans have sought after the original .44 Magnum "Flat Tops," of which less than 30,000 have been reportedly made. Then, in 2005, Ruger announced a new 50th Anniversary edition of the Ruger Blackhawk .44 Magnum with the appearance of the original flat top frame. The new 50th Anniversary Edition revolver is aesthetically a reproduction of the mid-century revolvers in .44, but include modern features such as the transfer bar safety and internal lock beneath the grip panels—features that dub the wheelgun the "New Model Blackhawk." These limited-edition revolvers were only available from 2006-2007 and included an eye-catching red plastic Ruger case and had inlaid in gold across the barrel, "50 YEARS OF .44 MAGNUM. 1956 TO 2006." This revolver is in very good used condition. The test casing data indicates this gun was built in 2007. There are visible usage marks on the frame and cylinder, but the gun is very clean and has likely only seen a few boxes of ammunition. The revolver has a 6 ½" barrel with 6-round fluted cylinder, and the sights are comprised of an adjustable rear sight with serrated ramp front sight. The New Model Blackhawk includes both the original black hardened rubber grips and a set of older wood grips with silver Ruger medallions. The revolver of course also includes the original red case, test-fired casings, safety lock, and user manual. .44 Magnum
