Description:
Antique ASA WATERS U.S. M1836 .54 Smoothbore FLINTLOCK Pistol w/CARTOUCHES

STANDARD ISSUE of the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR!

Here we present an antique A.H. Waters U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol, manufactured in 1842 in Milbury, Massachusetts. There were actually two manufacturers of these guns: Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. Combined, the production totals 41,000 guns. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in the percussion converted format.

The barrel, ramrod, swivel, barrel band, trigger guard, buttcap and back strap were "national armory bright". The lock plate, reinforced hammer, frizzen, barrel tang and trigger were color casehardened. The lock plate has a removable brass pan. The stock is straight grain, oil-finished black walnut. The lock plate has an eagle head above "A. WATERS/MILBURY. MS./1842." The left side of the barrel has "U.S./JH/P." Single Letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The left stock flat is clearly stamped with two Ordnance sub-inspectors and final inspector’s marks.

The overall condition is good. This example survives in its original flintlock configuration. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Replaced back strap. Absent pommel cap. The stock and grip are in very good shape and has been nicely re-oiled. “1842” dated lock. Two cartouches’ are present on the left stock flat. “T” and “P” are individually marked on the trigger guard.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
