Description:
This is a very rare Winchester Model 1895, there were several musket variations - Russian, NRA, etc.  This is a .30 US Army Pattern musket, possibly marketed later as a  commercial, or civilian musket.  These are very scarce, these  were likely an over run, muskets for military or state guard  that did not get sold.  These commercial muskets were listed in the Winchester catalog only for a few years - approx. 1901 - 1903.  This musket is chambered for the .30 US, or .30-40 Krag, and the receiver is unmarked - presumeably left unmarked until sold and marked for a large contract.      *** From the " Winchester 1895" book by Kassab and Dunbar, on pages 296-97, examples are shown with the 2nd Kentucky Infantry Regiment.  Identified muskets were in the 23300-26300 serial no. range, this rifle falls in that range. This musket arrived in the warehouse on April 11th, the same date as the second Kentucky shipment.  The book states that there were no special markings on these from the factory. ***  This musket does show slight wear where a bayonet was installed, it was in a later 1904 shipment - so it may have gone later to Kentucky, another state guard or later sold commercially.   The muskets that went to Mexico, Cuba, etc. did not survive in high condition.  This rifle remains in very high condition, the barrel is 28" and the bore is brilliant, bright, sharp, excellent.  The action is crisp and positive. Case colors are seen on the hammer and lever link.  The trap door buttplate has the original take down tool. The wood is solid, with original finish, showing scattered light dings, impressions  and minor scratches - typical of handling over the years.  The rifle has a high percentage of blueing on the receiver and barrel, with light wear to high edges and normal handling.  Overall this is a very fine, very rare Winchester Model 1895.
