PLATE Antique DERINGER .42 Percussion Pistol SAN FRANCISCO Retailer Marked POCKET PISTOL Here we present an antique A.J. Plate Retailer Marked Henry Deringer Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa the 1850s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A.J. Plate of San Francisco was one of just seventeen authorized agents for Henry Deringer, the famous gunsmith from Pennsylvania who began his company around 1809. Deringer’s pocket pistols, especially the popular “Deringer” percussion pistol from the 1850s, became highly sought after and widely copied, often bearing his name on inferior imitations. Concerned about protecting his reputation, Deringer actively sued counterfeiters and warned customers about imitations. Notably, President Abraham Lincoln was killed with a Deringer pistol purchased from one of his agents. This pistol has all the typical Henry Deringer style markings including a sunburst “P” on the left side of the breech and "DERINGER PHILADEL’A” on the lock plate and the top of the breech. It has “MADE FOR/A.J. Plate/SAN FRANCISCO" marked on the barrel with six-groove rifling. Plate purchased pairs from Henry Deringer and then further pistols from Slotter & Co. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape with service rifling. Solid stock and grip with average handling and storage wear, Legible markings and nice engravings. An escutcheon plate ahead of the lock is absent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 1-7/8 inches.
