Description:
Whitney 1841 U.S. Percussion rifle. 58 cal single-shot muzzleloader. 33" round browned barrel fastened by two barrel bands and not adopted for a bayonet. Brass mountings and patch box. U.S. marked on the buttplate and blued trigger, band springs, and screw heads. Case-hardened lock. Steel ramrod with a black walnut stock. Manufactured from 1842-1854, total production 22,500 under four contracts. Lock marked E Whitney over U.S. ahead of hammer and N Haven with date 1854. The rifle has been altered to 58 caliber by National Armories. The assemblies on these rifles were interchangeable among the years and therefore the dates of 1852 and 1854 are consistent with manufacture.
