The Root revolver, named after Samuel Colt's trusted factory superintendent, Elisha K. Root, is a prime example of Colt's relentless drive to innovate. Just six years after the Colt 1849 Pocket revolver, Colt was already eager to create an even better model. The Root introduced several groundbreaking features, like the “creeping” loading lever, which made it easier to load, and a solid frame for added durability. Colt even moved the hammer to the right side for better access to the cylinder axis pin, a clever design that made the gun more user-friendly. About 44,000 Root revolvers were produced between 1855 and 1870, a number that pales in comparison to Colt 1849 Pocket revolvers. Colt wasn't afraid to experiment, and the Root was a testing ground for many of his ideas. Some of these features, despite the small, fragile parts, would later influence his more successful designs, like the 1855 series of revolving rifles and shotguns. Colt even toyed with the Root design for a Dragoon pistol, which was a stepping stone to the iconic 1860 Army model. Despite its groundbreaking influence on the firearm industry, the 1855 Root revolver never quite achieved “legendary” or “iconic” status in the public eye. As a result it has been overlooked, never making a debut in a major film production or AAA video game, where firearms often play a starring role. The overall condition is good. Strong action.
