Description:
This is a rare, Maynard target rifle - built for offhand matches in the 1870's - 1890's era.  The rifle has 2 numbered matching barrels - a centerfire .38-50 Maynard ( very close dimension to the 38-55, cases also made from 30-40 )  and a .22 rimfire barrel. Both barrels have very fine bores. bright, excellent rifling.  The .38 cal is 28" long and the .22 is 26". Notice the .38 is half octagon, the .22 is 1/4 octagon. The barrels are marked with the serial number and rate of twist  - 18" on the 38-50 and 25" on the .22 rim fire.  The action is marked 1873, but the rifle has characteristics of an 1882 , with these calibers, the Hadley's Patent device and the high spur hammer.  Perhaps this was a very early 1882 ?  The action works nicely, firm, positive lock up, very positive hammer.  This rifle balances perfectly between the hands, it is quite easy to hold steady.  I believe the Hadley's device allowed different calibers to be used, and both these barrels have the correct recessed breech.  The rear vernier sight is a rack and pinion with pat. date.  The front sights are graduated, adjustable with a very fine post. The rimfire may require another device with a different firing pin - I'm not positive, there is a rimfire device shown in the book. This is a new book on the Maynard's and it is excellent, I've seen them available on G Bkr.  The fit and finish on this rifle is beautiful, it is an amazing piece of craftsmanship.  Much of the original finish remains overall, both wood and metal, with fading case colors on the receiver.  Overall a very fine antique that would be a nice addition to any collection.
