In 1898 the German Army purchased a Mauser design, the Model 98, which incorporated improvements introduced in earlier models. The weapon was originally chambered for the Patrone 88 and officially entered German service as the Gew. 98 on April 5, 1898. This remains by far the most successful of the Mauser designs, helped by the onset of two world wars that demanded vast numbers of rifles. In the years between 1934 and early 1941, Mauser used a different designation code on their rifles and pistols. Interestingly, since the terms of the Treaty of Versailles only allowed the German Simson & Company to produce any of the few small arms granted Germany after World War I, arms production was done secretly at Mauser, among others. The receiver is marked “42”, which was the code for the Mauser factory. Dates were left off of the frame until about 1936 when Germany’s arms production and military activities started to be brought into the light. Waffenamt codes seen on this example were the inspection marks used on military equipment by the German Third Reich. One has to ask, what history did this rifle see? Did it invade France or possibly Poland? Was it on the battlefield on D-Day? Here is a nice Model 98 that surely has some stories to tell. Manufactured at the start of World War II, this Mauser 98 bears the "42" code over the "1938" date on the receiver ring, along with dotted out Third Reich German Military inspection marks. The barrel is fitted with the standard blade and tangent sights. The overall condition is very good. Gray patina on the barrel and receiver. This example is refinished. Re-varnished stock. The action is strong. Numbers match on the receiver, magazine well, magazine well tang. Bright shiny bore with sharp rifling. Legible markings. Repaired crack in the butt. Own the original!
