Brief History of J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company Joshua Stevens, an experienced toolmaker and inventor, founded J. Stevens & Co. in 1864 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Stevens had previously worked for Colt and Mass. Arms, and brought considerable firearms knowledge to his own company. The company quickly became known for producing affordable, accurate, and innovative single-shot pistols and rifles, many of which were designed for recreational shooting and target practice. Their early pocket pistols, such as this Old Model Pocket Pistol (1884–1886), marked the beginning of Stevens’ long line of rimfire handguns. By the late 19th and early 20th century, Stevens expanded into rifles, shotguns, and target arms. They developed a reputation for accuracy, and their rifles were widely used by marksmen, hunters, and even Olympic competitors. In 1920, Stevens was acquired by Savage Arms but continued to produce firearms under the Stevens name for decades. Today, early Stevens pistols like this one are prized by collectors as they represent the origins of a company that became one of the most successful American makers of affordable sporting arms. 1.
