Stevens Old Model Pocket Pistol 1st & 2nd types.  Manufactured 1864 - 1886.  Only about 15,000 produced and extremely hard to find.  Antique Stevens Old Model Pocket Pistol Firearm Description Manufacturer: J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Model: Old Model Pocket Pistol Production Period: 1884–1886 Total Production: ~15,000 units Caliber: .22 Rimfire Action: Single shot, tip-up barrel with ejector Frame: Brass frame with removable side plate Barrel: 3 ½" part round/octagon Markings: “J. STEVENS A & T CO. CHICOPEE FALLS. MASS. PAT. SEP. 6. 1864.” Finish: Nickel Grips: Walnut, numbered to the gun Serial No. 12226 Condition: 99% original nickel finish, excellent with minor surface scratches. Bore: Very minor pitting from blackpowder use; strong rifling present. Grips: Original walnut grips, very good condition, no cracks or chips, light handling marks. Mechanics: Functions perfectly with a strong hammer spring. Overall: An outstanding example of an early Stevens pistol in original condition. Brief History of J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company Joshua Stevens, an experienced toolmaker and inventor, founded J. Stevens & Co. in 1864 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Stevens had previously worked for Colt and Mass. Arms, and brought considerable firearms knowledge to his own company. The company quickly became known for producing affordable, accurate, and innovative single-shot pistols and rifles, many of which were designed for recreational shooting and target practice. Their early pocket pistols, such as this Old Model Pocket Pistol (1884–1886), marked the beginning of Stevens’ long line of rimfire handguns. By the late 19th and early 20th century, Stevens expanded into rifles, shotguns, and target arms. They developed a reputation for accuracy, and their rifles were widely used by marksmen, hunters, and even Olympic competitors. In 1920, Stevens was acquired by Savage Arms but continued to produce firearms under the Stevens name for decades.
