RARE NICKEL & IVORY Antique C.H. BALLARD DERRINGER .41 RF HIDEOUT Pistol
One of only a Few Thousand Made, Circa 1870
Here we present an antique C.H. Ballard Single Shot Derringer, made circa 1870, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Charles H. Ballard is much better known for his single shot rifle design, but he also designed, patented, and produced this .41 rimfire caliber derringer. This would have been a great little pistol to keep in one’s pocket, boot, or up one’s sleeve for a tight spot. Henry Deringer-inspired pistols like this are commonly associated with riverboat gamblers and card sharps.
Production began circa 1870, with only a few thousand thought to have been made, that figure split into a handful of variations. The pistol was designed to be a tiny but potent self-defense tool, being only 5 inches long and carrying one shot of .41 caliber rimfire ammunition. Its tip-up barrel and automatic extractor made loading and unloading easy.
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish with case colors on the hammer. The ivory grips are solid. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. A handsome little Ballard!
