Description:
Here is an antique 12ga. Percussion Coachgun:
A very nice feature is the brass Hawken style trigger guard. It also has nice touches of hand engraving on the trigger guard, the locks, the hammers an the nipple snail. That along with rawhide wrapped forearm and WELLS FARGO PROPERTY  TAG make this a true “one of a kind” collectible.
Guns like this were use to guard gold bullion on stage coaches and trains in the mid 1850s and 1860s and on into late 70s in the West until they were replaced by the cartridge shell versions. These were used by Wells Fargo, Adams and American Express companies as well as the railroads.
The coach gun was carried right along with the strong box. This one has a brass “WELLS FARGO” label attached to the right side of the stock.
It looks to me that the nipples will have to be cleaned up or replace if you want it to shoot it. This is a very durable shotgun with 21 inch barrels and is 36 1/2 inches overall. The stock has a rawhide rap that has beed added, likely because the barrel key was missing or the stock was damaged. Either way it is a very good way to secure the barrels to the stock and add a colorful touch. It would look right in place on a frontier stagecoach. The locks are marked “Rich Hollis” and both locks function as they should.
