“BIG COLT” Inscribed Antique COLT NEW LINE 5-Shot .41 RF Revolver SN 77!
Early, First Year Production with Kittredge Moniker!
Here we present an antique Colt “New Line” .41 Caliber Rimfire Pocket Revolver made in its first year of production in 1874 in Hartford, Connecticut with a serial number of “77”. This handy 5-shot Colt, referred to as the “Big Colt” by Kittredge, a major firearms dealer in Cincinnati, Ohio, and this is one of the very early ones that were engraved on the right side of the barrel with the moniker. The left side of the barrel is properly void of the acid etched caliber panel.
This revolver carried quite the punch for a pocket self-defense revolver with those 5 rounds of .41 rimfire. The large caliber of this variation makes it the most desirable of the “New Lines” with approximately 10,702 manufactured from 1874-1879 due to the short production run. This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger manufacturing was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar, less expensive revolvers, though not necessarily of the same quality. The Colt remained a steady, reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest.
The New Line series of revolvers, including all calibers, was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt. With such a limited number of examples and the larger caliber, this is a very desirable firearm for a Colt collector.
The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout with some silvered case colors. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The grips are solid and show use. Numbers match. Serial number 77 of a scarce Colt with a scarcer “Big Colt” inscription!
