Nicely Engraved SWIVEL BARREL Pre-Colt Pistol
Here we present an antique Scarce Factory Engraved National Arms Company No. 2 Derringer Pistol, made just after the close of the American Civil War with a production run between 1865 and 1870 in Brooklyn, New York. Only 12,000 of these were made by National Arms before the company was purchased by Colt. This scarce little Deringer is chambered for a single shot of .41 rimfire, a likely choice for very concealable self-defense in the last half of the 19th Century. One could use this as a hideout in a pocket, boot top, or up a sleeve. This is the type of pistol commonly associated with riverboat gamblers and the like!
The entire barrel swivels on a hinge for loading, when the hammer is put into half cock and the release button is pushed. The hammer is split and acts as the rear sight when in full cock. After the original maker, Moore’s, was purchased by the National Arms Co., the Colt Firearms Co. bought National Arms and started making the pistol in 1870.
This overall condition is fine. Original silver plate finish throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips are in fine shape with sharp checkering. A fantastic example of this scarce pistol which would soon be picked up by Colt!
