Full length 6 shot magazine. Saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. A carbine band holding on the plain walnut forearm with a matching straight straight grip stock and a carbine style buttplate. Sounds like a typical 1894 saddle ring carbine, but when you look closely, there are certain inconsistencies with a standard Model 1894 carbine. The 20 inch round barrel with a pinned blade front sight is pinned into a contoured ramp rather than a square stud. The magazine retainer is the rifle style that dovetails into the bottom of the barrel rather than the typical carbine style band that wraps around the top of the barrel. There is an oddly placed filled hole about an inch ahead of the rear sight, and the bore has a 1 in 10 inch rate of twist rather than the standard 1 in 12 associated with 30 WCF. These are clues that indicate this is one of the rare guns Winchester made with surplus Model 95 barrels left over after Model 95 production had ended. They were cut off at the breech, re-chambered for 30 WCF and fit onto carbines. Listed by serial number, this is one of the rare “Model 94/95 Hybrid Carbines” profiled in THE WINCHESTER COLLECTOR magazine Summer 2012. At the time of the article, it states there had been approximately 50 of these hybrid carbines discovered. Comes with a copy of the article. Would make a great addition to any 1894 collection!
