Early production five-shot percussion revolver  and smooth walnut grips. A scarce and desirable example of Allen & Wheelock’s compact pocket model, designed for discreet civilian carry in the mid-19th century.
Allen & Wheelock, active in the mid-19th century, were known for producing innovative and compact firearms suited for civilian use and personal defense. Among their smaller designs was the Small Frame Pocket Revolver, chambered in .31 caliber. These revolvers were manufactured in relatively limited numbers and were intended to be a concealable sidearm, easily carried in a coat pocket.
This particular revolver retains its period character, showing patina consistent with age, and represents an early example of Allen & Wheelock’s efforts to supply the civilian market with concealable and affordable revolvers in the years leading up to the American Civil War.
Allen & Wheelock, established in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the 1850s, produced a variety of innovative and finely made percussion revolvers. While larger military and service-style models were part of their catalog, the company also manufactured small frame pocket revolvers intended for the civilian market. Chambered in .31 caliber, these compact revolvers provided a concealable yet functional firearm for personal protection, an important consideration in the uncertain decades before and during the Civil War.
The example presented here is a small frame Allen & Wheelock pocket revolver with a 3-inch octagonal barrel and serial number 99, placing it among the early production run. Surviving examples in this serial range are relatively scarce, as these revolvers were manufactured in limited quantities compared to Allen & Wheelock’s more common sidearms. The revolver features a five-shot cylinder, and smooth walnut grips that remain consistent with the company’s practice of balancing simplicity with durability.
These revolvers were marketed primarily as affordable and easily carried defensive weapons. At the time, urban centers and the expanding western frontier both created a demand for small-caliber arms that could be discreetly carried in a coat or waist pocket. While not as powerful as larger martial revolvers, the Allen & Wheelock .31 caliber pocket models offered practical self-defense at close range and were priced to appeal to the middle class.
The firearm exhibits the hallmarks of Allen & Wheelock’s craftsmanship, with a solid frame design and clean mechanical lines. The early serial number and compact configuration add to its collectibility, making this revolver a desirable piece for collectors of American percussion-era firearms. Its survival in presentable condition provides a tangible link to the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of mid-19th century American gunmaking.
