1800s Antique Smoothbore LONG RIFLE Signed by J. HAEFFER .54 Caliber
With a REMINGTON Lock and I. HAEFFER Marked Barrel
Here we present an antique Half-Stock Smoothbored Long Rifle Signed “I. HAEFFER” for Jacob Haeffer on the Barrel. This piece was made circa the 1830s-1840s. This would have been a critical piece of kit for virtually anyone living in the still young United States in this period, but especially for those living on the Frontier, such as pioneers, trailblazers, trappers, hunters, homesteaders, and farmers. This would have put food on the table and provided protection against animals and ne’er-do-wells.
This one features a single trigger, Remington lock, octagonal barrel bored smooth to .54 caliber, crescent butt plate, and small brass patch box. Features Jacob’s distinctive signature (I was used instead of J frequently in this day) on top of the barrel. Jacob and brother John were both gunmakers and smiths associated with Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Pittsburgh; and Frederick County, Maryland, per J.B. Whisker’s Gunsmiths & Allied Tradesmmen of Eastern Pennsylvania.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina. The hammer does not hold in the cock position. Barrel bored smooth, dark. This example sports a solid stock with a smooth finish and average handling wear.
