Description:
CUSTOM Black Powder UNDERHAMMER BENCH REST .50 Cal. Percussion SLUG Rifle

With Custom TOOL CHEST, DOCUMENTATION, and MANY ACCESSORIES

Here we present a Heavy Barrel Underhammer Percussion Bench Rest Slug Rifle in .50, made circa the 1950s. This rifle is extremely heavy and would have been most ideally used off of a bench or a stump. Its stout round barrel has a strong .50 caliber, large enough to take pretty much any size game one would want to hunt, or just used as a precision target rifle, which is likely what this rifle was used for.

It is said that there are around 200 “Slug Gun” shooters within the United States, and that they a fairly close knit bunch. Most all these slug guns are custom built, as is this one. These are very specialized guns with very skilled tradesmen building and shooting them.

This rifle comes with a custom wooden tool chest. “H. Philip Orem” and “WILLIAM CROWLEY/SHARON, MASS./1973/.50 CAL. SLUG GUN” marked plaques are on the top of the lid. Inside the chest there are a variety of plugs, nipples, measures, punches, patches, molds, oil, starter, and more. Also included are copies of documents about shooting slug guns. From the enclosed documents, it seems this rifle was made in roughly 1950 by an individual in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Underhammer slug gun shooting is a truly special and demanding sport that blends the craftsmanship of black powder firearms with the skill of long-range precision. The rifles and methods employed by their shooters highlight the creativity and dedication of this passionate community of marksmen.
