This is a relatively high condition pistol retaining most of its high polish, factory finish. It was manufactured in 1908 when Colt was still using its charcoal bluing process that produced the high luster finishes on these early guns. It has the usual handling marks and scratches, but overall quite nice. The biggest area of issue is a spot in the middle of the left side of the slide where some of the finish has been rubbed off. Please see the pictures. I am not an expert, so I do not attempt to ascribe a finish percentage to the gun. The outfit I purchased it from rated it as a 95% finish, so make of that what you will. Please view the pictures and decide for yourself. Most of these 1905s that you see have either retained little finish or have dulled over time and lost their polished shine. This one is an exception to that and a nice survivor gun. The trigger, screws/pins, extractor, and the magazine release have maintained most of their nitre/fire blue finish as well. As with rating the gun’s finish, I will also refrain from rating the bore, but the outfit I purchased it from described it as such: “The bore is mostly bright with strong lands and grooves. There are a few small areas of light patchy frost. The bore rates an 8 out of 10. The chamber area is very clean.” Again, please decide for yourself based on the pictures. I am happy to take more pictures as best I can when requested. For serious inquiries, I will also share the photos the previous seller used to advertise the pistol which may better represent the pistol than my own photos.
The only issue I have identified with the gun is that the hammer mainspring is a bit weak and therefore the hammer doesn’t strike the firing pin with much force. The gun has no other issues that I am aware of and would fit in nicely in any Colt automatic collection. Colt only made around 6,100 of these Model 1905s, so they are relatively rare, especially with this much original finish left on them. The gun comes with one original magazine.
